Our People: Standard’s Most Important Asset

How many times have you heard this tagline for a company? Every day, it’s repeated again and again by companies in a variety of industries—construction services, commercial construction, food service, meat packing, whatever. If a company exists, it has, at some point, uttered this line.

My question is: Does the company REALLY value its employees as the most important asset?

My heart wants to say ”Yes,” but my now-63-year-old mind says “No.”

If you value employees, where is the training program for new hires?

Where is the program to develop future leaders?

If you are in Standard’s industry—construction services—where is consistent and robust Safety Training?

  • If an employee encounters tragedy—on the job or at home—where is the support for that employee?
  • If an employee shows some good ability and work ethic, where is a mentoring program?

Standard is a family-owned business, and we strive to treat our employees as family members. On many occasions, Standard has paid for funerals, medical bills, emergency housing, and a list of other responses to needs. “Lift up others according to their needs.” We are expected to go above and beyond for customers. However, we must expect one another at Standard to go above and beyond for one another.

Standard’s Core Values lead each of us to deliver excellence for our customers and employees. As our greatest asset, we must deliver for our co-workers, whether those co-workers have been with us 10 months or 10 years, or more. It’s all part of that one Core Value that implores us to “Do The Right Thing.

By following our Core Values, we expect to make a fair profit for the value of work performed for every customer. However, do we expect ourselves to “Do The Right Thing” for our co-workers? The answer should always be a resounding YES!
